Airbag Safety & Compatibility | Custom Seat Covers by EKR
Designed with side airbags in mind.
For seat mounted side airbags, the placement of a seat cover's release seam matters. Learn how we approach the design, how to check your vehicle, and what to review during installation.

The side seam is a critical detail.
Many vehicles have side airbags housed in the front seat backrest. For applicable EKR vehicle specific designs, we plan the cover's outer side seam around the seat's intended airbag release area.
Consider the original seat
We review the seat shape, side airbag location and configuration when developing a vehicle specific cover.
Plan the release seam
The relevant side seam uses a release construction aligned with the intended deployment area. EKR uses dedicated airbag stitching methods on applicable products.
Keep the path clear
Correct fit and installation matter. Do not cover, reinforce, alter or obstruct a designated release seam.
Stitching designed for its role.
Our production process uses Dürkopp sewing equipment and dedicated airbag seam construction for applicable seat covers. The seam's location and specification should match the intended seat design; ordinary decorative stitching does not serve the same purpose.
Our video shows an airbag deployment demonstration with an EKR seat cover. It illustrates the tested setup shown in the footage. It does not establish compatibility for every vehicle, cover or installation.
- The product is specified for your exact vehicle and seat configuration.
- The cover's designated release side is positioned as instructed.
- No accessory, added stitching or loose material obstructs the area.
- Seat belts, buckles, seat controls and required access points remain usable.

Four checks before installation is complete.
A cover must be selected and fitted for the seat it will go on. If your seat or cover differs from the product instructions, pause and ask us for help.
Check the year, make, model, trim, row and seat layout. Review the vehicle owner's manual to identify side airbags and any manufacturer instructions about seat covers.
Use the correct driver and passenger pieces. Check labels and the product installation instructions before pulling the cover over the seat.
Position the designated seam on the intended side. Do not add stitching, tape, straps or another cover over that area.
Make sure seat controls, seat belt buckles and accessible anchorage points can be used as intended. If anything appears obstructed, stop and seek guidance.
Airbag compatibility, explained.
Can I use any seat cover on a seat with side airbags?
Do not assume a universal or different vehicle's cover is suitable. Check the vehicle manufacturer's guidance and select a cover specified for your exact seat and configuration.
Where do seat mounted side airbags deploy?
On many vehicles, they deploy from the outer side of the front seat backrest. The location varies. Consult your owner's manual and the markings on your seat rather than relying on a general diagram.
Does the video prove every EKR cover will work in every crash?
No. It demonstrates the setup shown in the video. Airbag deployment depends on the vehicle, collision conditions and correct selection and installation of the cover.
What if my car has an airbag warning light after installation?
Stop using the affected setup and follow your vehicle manufacturer's guidance. Contact a qualified service professional to diagnose the warning; do not attempt to reset or repair the safety system based on the cover instructions alone.
Where can I get help identifying the correct cover?
Contact our team with your vehicle's year, make, model, trim, seat layout and clear photos of the seat. You can also review the EKR Help Center for installation resources.
Ask us before you install.
Share your vehicle and seat details so we can help you review the correct product and installation information.
Vehicle owner manuals and product specific instructions take priority. EKR does not claim that NHTSA certifies aftermarket seat covers.
